Physics Bowl

The Physics Bowl is a physics competition for high school students, typically organized by the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). The competition aims to inspire students to deepen their understanding of physics and enhance their problem-solving skills. The Physics Bowl is usually held annually in the spring, and participants take the exam either at their school or a designated testing location.

Students typically participate by registering through their school or physics teacher. The questions and challenges vary by grade level, with different sets of problems for different age groups. Top performers are usually awarded certificates, prizes, and may have the chance to compete in higher-level physics contests to showcase their talents.

Contest Process

  • Division 1

Division 1 is for students in grades 9-12, with more challenging questions covering advanced topics such as mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, optics, and modern physics. The aim is to test students' deep understanding and application of physical principles. Winners typically receive certificates, prizes, and may have the opportunity to participate in higher-level competitions like the US Physics Olympiad.

  • Division 2

Division 2 is for students in grades 7-9, with questions focused on basic physics concepts such as mechanics and electricity. The difficulty is lower, making it suitable for middle and early high school students. Winners receive certificates and prizes, encouraging further development of their interest and knowledge in physics.

  • USPhO

Top performers in the Physics Bowl, especially in Division 1, may be invited to participate in the US Physics Olympiad (USPhO). Outstanding students in USPhO have the chance to represent the U.S. at the IPhO, competing with the best young physicists from around the world.
